Structure of pulsar beams : conal versus patchy

چکیده

Structure of mean pulsar radiation patterns is discussed within the nested-cones and patchy beam models. Observational predictions of both these models are analyzed and compared with available data on pulsar waveforms. It is argued that observational properties of pulsar waveforms are highly consistent with the nestedcone model and, in general, inconsistent with the patchy beam model.

An inverse Compton scattering (ICS) model of pulsar emission I. Core and conal emission beams

Core and conal emission beams of radio pulsars have been identified observationally (Rankin 1983,1993; Lyne and Manchester 1988), In the inner gap model (Ruderman and Sutherland 1975, hereafter RS75), the gap continually breaks down (sparking) by forming electron-positron pairs on a time scale of a few microseconds (RS75). This makes a large amplitude low frequency wave to be produced and which...

1 Frequency dependence of pulsar radiation patterns

We report on new results from simultaneous, dual frequency, single pulse observations of PSR B0329+54 using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. We find that the longitude separation of subpulses at two different frequencies (238 and 612 MHz) is less than that for the corresponding components in the average profile. A similar behaviour has been noticed before in a number of pulsars. We argue th...

Toward An Empirical Theory of Pulsar Emission VIII: Subbeam Circulation and the Polarization-Modal Structure of Conal Beams

The average polarization properties of conal single and double profiles directly reflect the polarization-modal structure of the emission beams which produce them. Conal component pairs exhibit large fractional linear polarization on their inside edges and virtually complete depolarization on their outside edges; whereas profiles resulting from sightline encounters with the outer conal edge are...

Revisiting the shape of pulsar beams

Characterizing the shape and evolution of pulsar radio emission beams is important for understanding the observed emission. The various attempts by earlier workers investigating beam shapes have resulted in widely different conclusions. Using a carefully selected subset of the recently published multifrequency polarimetry observations of 300 radio pulsars (Gould & Lyne, 1998), we attempt to mod...
